Walking the Walk, Baby!

October 19, 2011

J. Fields Jr. was recently interviewed by his local paper. Congratulations, J.!

J. Fields Jr. is a talented guy so it was bound to happen sooner or later, and it is undoubtably the first of many.

Now here is a remarkable thing; J. used his time in the spotlight to highlight other indie authors. This furthers my belief that indie authors are an extraordinary bunch. We support each other in pretty much ever capacity possible – from beta reading to marketing advice to plugging each other’s work to rallying around someone who is having a stress-induced meltdown. There are literally (and anyone who reads this blog knows I never use the word literally when I actually mean figuratively) dozens and dozens, if not hundreds of resources, grass roots marketing tools, promo opportunities, and author groups online that have been created by indie authors for the sole purpose of supporting other indie writers. In other words, indie artists don’t just talk the talk when it comes to supporting each other, they also walk the walk.

I, myself, like to send my work to small, indie publishers. It is my preference. Although I have not actually sat down and dissected my reasons behind sending my work only to small publishing houses, I am sure it has something to do with the personalized treatment, ability to have a say (even if it is not final say) with cover designs, marketing, and, of course, the editing and formatting support. I also have a plethora of preferred groups that I run to whenever I need advice, distraction, or even a bitch slap back into reality when I start to feel a little overwhelmed. Groups such as #pubwrite on Twitter, The Writer’s group on Facebook, or Writer’s Corner on Erica Lucke Dean’s site are my support groups of choice (way cheaper than therapy). Oh, hey. The Writer’s corner was also mentioned in J. Field’s Jr.’s Interview, posted below.

Find J.Field Jr.’s article in the tenth page of The Resident here. Find his website here, or purchase his book, why don’t you?

As a complete coincidence, J. Fields Jr. inspired this week’s Threesome Thursday post, so make sure to check it out tomorrow.

I only read Indies, so it’s a beautiful thing to see one tout another.

I like this guy for a bunch of reasons, not just because I’m one of the authors he mentioned in the article. Read “Casino Shuffle” and you’ll understand.
