Friday Spotlight With Author Kelly Stone Gamble

December 9, 2011

I love Spotlight Friday’s so much. The fabulous Kelly Stone Gamble appeared on a recent Friday Spotlight as a HUGE favour to me and, due to popular demand (mostly mine) she is back, this time for her regularly scheduled Friday Spotlight. And, as if that in itself was not full of enough awesomeness, Kelly has agreed to do a (gasp) flash fiction challenge!

Kelly was given five word prompts, which she had to incorporate into her 200 word or less flash fiction piece within just 24 hours.

Here were her word prompts:

  • Smack
  • Fever
  • Tie
  • Reason
  • Doughnut

And here is the fabulousity she came up with:

The Break Up
“There’s a reason I don’t want you anymore.”  I tried to keep my voice down, not wanting to cause a scene.  I looked around the coffee shop–one other patron, a guy drinking coffee and eating a bowl of Sugar Smacks.
I didn’t want to be cruel, but it was over.  I sighed and tried to explain.  “You really are sweet, but let’s face it, you just aren’t good for me.”
Mr. Sugar Smacks was looking directly at me. Mind your own business, asshole.  This is hard enough without an audience.  I turned back, and found myself licking my lips. Dammit! Focus!
He walked to my table, using the tail of his hideous Christmas tie to dab dribbles of milk from the corners of his mouth.  His face was red as a fever.    Why do I always attract the weirdo’s?
“Excuse me, miss, but are you okay?”
I wiped my face, hoping I hadn’t started tearing, or drooling.  Dry.  “I’m fine, why wouldn’t I be?”
He shrugged.  “Because you’re talking to a doughnut.”
~~~
Kelly, that was absolutely perfect! It was also uncannily similar to a date I had this weekend.
Your flash fiction piece was obviously outside of the realm of historical fiction. Do you often write in genres outside of historical fiction? If yes, which ones?
I write in any genre that gives me a story.  I like to research, so historical fiction lets me add that aspect to my writing.  I also like to write humor, but I don’t always think I’m funny.
Do you have a preferred place or time of day to write?
I write at night when I don’t get interruptions like ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ or ‘Mom, what are you doing?’   I also have narcolepsy, so I’m usually up most of the night anyway, except for a nap here and there. Writing keeps me out of trouble.
Do you have an unusual or interesting hobby/hobbies?
That depends. Is dressing as a bunny and screaming “I am your leader” to people walking out of bars at 2 a.m. considered unusual or interesting?
Unusual and interesting, yes. Abnormal, nope, not in my books.
If you had a chance to go cow tipping, would you?
I have a lot of respect for cows, so probably not. Politician tipping sounds like fun, though.
What is the one song you are embarrassed that you know all of the words to?
Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. Riley. My go-to karaoke song, because I can’t sing (and neither could she).
Kelly, thank you so much for stopping by the e-rotica blog and getting under the covers with me. Where can everyone stalk you?
    Heehee! Great story, and great questions too. I’ve only just become aware of the notion of flash fiction in the last few days. What a great example of what it can be. Brilliant post you two!
    You really had me on the doughnut’s side until I realized it wasn’t a bacon doughnut LOL
    Please make it a maple bacon doughnut next time – please? The relationship might blossom…a very funny post and I like the Q&A afterward.
    It was a warm blueberry cake donut with fresh blueberries and dripping with glaze. A nibble wouldn’t hurt, right?
  14. December 10, 2011 7:35 am
    That was awesome!
  15. December 10, 2011 4:01 pm
    I had a feeling she wasn’t talking to someone sitting with her but didn’t pick the doughnut. I thought maybe it was more like a practice run for an actual break up. 🙂
