Killing With Kindness. It Doesn’t Work

May 12, 2012

I would like to sum up my week with a single conversation.

Me: Ma’am, my I have your registration sheet

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Blank stare

Me: Ma’am, my I have your registration sheet, please.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Blank stare

Me: Ma’am please hand me your registration sheet.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Oh. Finally. This is the most disorganized mess I’ve ever been in. I’ve been waiting an hour.

Me: Sorry to keep you waiting. Our internet connection went down so our scanners aren’t working.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: That is no excuse. If you weren’t such an idiot, this line would be moving faster.

Me: If you hand me your registration sheet, I will get you out of the line and on your way.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Hands registration sheet.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Why is this taking so long? You are completely incompetent.

Me: Your name is not in our system. I see you have a middle name. I’ll try it with that and check for spelling errors.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: What a mess. This is ridiculous. Could they not get more competent staff?

Me: Shows her screen. Are you sure this is the email you registered under? Perhaps your assistant registered you under her email?

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Rants loudly to other people.

Me: Ma’am, I cannot find you on this system. Please wait right here and I will print your badge on another system.

Me: walks away. Goes to management system. Finds, prints registration card, while listening toΒ Psycho Bitch from Hell yelling from ten feet away that I’m an incompetent idiot.

Me: Ma’am here is your registration card.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: I saw your screen. You typed in the wrong email address, that’s why you couldn’t find me! Do you have no brains? I waited an hour in that line.

Me: Ma’am, please take your registration card and proceed to the trade show floor.

Psycho Bitch from Hell: Idiot!

Me: Have a pleasant day.

Wow! I don’t know if I would have been that pleasant. I had a similar customer treat me that way at the newspaper, but I gave her the “Bitch, I have about had enough of your bullshit” look that helped changed her tune. A little bit of subtle professional sarcasm helped too. πŸ™‚

Honestly, this was one interaction of many, thanks to the failing scanners and cuts in staffing. I feel I deserve an Oreo cookie for being so effing patient with everyone. Urgh…

OMG! Sounds like the idiots I have to deal with daily, looking for a fight. πŸ™‚ I am an operator at a local hotel/casino, and in the middle of night when i work they are tired, drunk, mad, or any combination of the three. But i love my job! I really do…… no face to face, they start screaming or swearing at me, opps, did I just hang up on them?

Hope your new week goes better.

Oh Lyssa, I don’t think I could put up with this on a daily basis. Kudos to you!

I don’t think I could have done that.

Luckily I was on twelve hour shifts. I was so tired by this point I was on auto pilot. πŸ™‚

I worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office and as a bar tender for years. I am not one bit surprised by the ignorance of some people. Least you managed to stay calm and say something polite at the end of it. Well done!

    • May 12, 2012 7:53 pm

Thanks! I went home and washed down my troubles with an overflowing glass of red wine. πŸ™‚

Good on you. Glass of wine always helps.

Good for you for staying pleasant. I worked in customer service for years and it’s ASTOUNDING how nasty and bad-mannered people can be. But I have to say you probably DID kill her with kindness. I’m sure all she wanted was to make you either lose your cool or start to cry, and by being perfectly polite you made sure that all she did was make herself look bad to everyone around her.

What goes around comes around. I’m sure she made your day pretty icky, but just think how little fun SHE could possibly be having with an attitude like that.

    • May 12, 2012 7:54 pm

You’re right. She certainly made a spectacle of herself. I can’t imagine her day getting any better. πŸ˜€

OMG you are strong. I would have just not been so kind…You rock….

  7. May 12, 2012 2:52 pm

OKAY… I am not sure I would have been that polite. any policy saying that you can ask a customer that unless she is polite, you will not proceed or ask the manager to handle her directly?
Maybe I would have been eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeextremely slow with a huge smile on my face. I am good to make it worse.
    Girl… you deserve you salary!

Lol! I was the manager, unfortunately! She was one of those people who just wanted me to say something, anything to perpetuate her tirade. I just had to ignore her and get her the hell away from me. πŸ˜€
